The March 23, 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated contains a very insightful article about how and why athletes go broke.  I was happy to see attention being paid to this topic, because it is something I have known about for some time.  In fact, one of the reasons we started the Sports & Entertainment division within The Campins Company is to provide a platform for athletes and entertainers to have a trusted source that can guide them with their long-term interests in mind when it comes to real estate dealings.  By being able to work with them on all of their real estate needs, we can look at their bigger-picture situation and advise them accordingly, much like a financial advisor would advise a client as to their financial portfolio.

More than 50% of all athletes are broke within three years of being retired, and bad real estate decisions (such as owning multiple houses in which the athlete does not have substantial equity) play a major role in that statistic.  Many athletes don’t plan for the future when their high current income level drops sharply, and they cannot continue to afford large mortgage payments that they could afford during their playing days.  This is one reason I believe athletes should put down a larger down payment than the typical home buyer.  The other mistake I see is athletes owning more homes than they need.  In the real estate market of old, this was not much of a concern because it was easy to dispose of real estate.  In today’s market, we all know that buyers are in the driver’s seat and many sellers cannot sell their house without taking a loss.

I applaud SI for this piece and I hope that more athletes take control of their financial futures and focus on their investments, real estate and lifestyle.  It is not cool to not be accountable and in control over your financial situation.  Unfortunately, too many athletes are oblivious to this and by the time they do pay attention, it is too late.

Two years ago, a prominent sports agent contacted me on behalf of a young lady he obviously holds in high regard. He spoke to me about Kara Dooley, who had just graduated from the “U” and was extremely passionate about real estate - specifically my “NICHE”- The Sports and Entertainment Clientele. Normally I do not take on new talent, simply because I am not set up to do so, but I agreed to meet with Kara. The minute I met Kara, I understood why this renowned sports persona went out of his way to recommend that I meet with her. Kara was not only passionate about real estate, but quite determined to make it in the industry.

She exuded goodness, enthusiasm, professionalism and she was a “Class Act” – In essence I was honored to have a young professional of her caliber looking to join and grow with The Campins Company. Greg Olsen, a first round pick that year and her boyfriend at the time was drafted by the Chicago Bears. These circumstances solidified our plan to open an office in Chicago - after all, we had been involved in quite a few real estate transactions there in recent years with other sports personalities! We set the wheels in motion and proudly proceeded with the opening of our Chicago office. I consider myself beyond blessed to have Kara and Greg in my life. They are amazing individuals with impeccable values and a genuine desire to work hard and do well by others - something I do not take for granted! Having said that, it is with the utmost gratitude that I say THANK YOU Kara and Greg for allowing me into your life - it is both an honor and a privilege to have you as part of The Campins Company family. I couldn’t be happier for you both and look forward to the beautiful children, growth and happiness you will undoubtedly enjoy for years to come.

I want to hear from YOU, the public!  Have you ever make an exemption in your life/work that proved to make a significant difference in your life and that of others?  Do you believe people come into your life for a reason?  Do you believe energy connects us to eachother?  How has passion driven your life, work or family?
